artist's statement

This series or paintings is a visual, abstract expression of my discovery and exploration of Tibetan Buddhism. Through the connection of shape, color, texture, and symbolism my intent is to explore our common path, each unique in its own route and yet, universal in its goal.

Each piece of artwork has one or more Tibetan prayers embedded within – a humble request for compassion, courage, knowledge, or end to suffering. The mantras and sutras embedded in the paintings are conduits to assist on the path toward enlightenment and freedom.

The pieces incorporate mythical emblems and elements central to Buddhist thought:

  • Groupings of 3s represent the Three Crown Jewels (The Buddha, The Dharma and The Sangha)
  • Sets of 8s for the Eight-Fold Path
  • Elements in 4s signify the 4 Immeasurables (Love, Joy, Compassion, Equanimity) and The Four Noble Truths

In this series, the canvas represents one’s mind. The vibrant, saturated colors represent our thoughts and emotions. The layering of texture can be interpreted as active thoughts constantly bombarding our minds, distracting us from the present moment. The elements of the paintings often overlap like thoughts and experiences layered in our minds. Through honest self-inquiry and meditative introspection, one can deconstruct this maze and uncover the true, compassionate nature that exists in each of us. The use of circles signifies our breath, or pranayama, which radiates from our inner core and ripples out to our existence, connecting us to all beings. Circles also have a universal mystical protective significance.

The purpose of my art is the attainment of a higher level by all who experience them. Its real significance lies not only in its aesthestic value, but also in its ability to transform our emotions - a synthesis of the external and internal worlds.

May all those who experience these pieces be blessed, protected, happy, and eventually enlightened. Enjoy these paintings and your own unique path.
