NEIGHBORS – Meet Laura Elia
Artist Laura Elia heads a successful interior design firm that lends form and function to many area homes and offices. But when she’s not decorating or drawing up plans for clients, she creates colorful, contemporary art that reflects her interest in Eastern religions. Recently, she took her art show, Awake, to Oak Cliff Bishop Arts District’s Bubble, where it made its debut Nov. 1 and can be seen by appointment through Dec. 1 by calling 214.906.0230

Who shares this art-inspired life with you?
I live with my husband Randy; 8-year-old twins, Noah and Maya; a cat, Midnight; and new puppy, Zoë.
How long have you lived around here and what do you think about the area?
I have lived near White Rock Lake for 18 years. I love the people, architecture, proximity to anything worth seeing or doing, and the overall eclectic vibe that the area offers.
What can you tell us about your design business?
I have co-owned Artful Interiors for six years. We are a full-service residential and small-business interior design firm, which offers new construction, remodels, material specification, furniture, art, accessories, space planning, furniture plans, and consultation.
Tell us a little about your artwork and how the two relate to each other?
I appreciate and practice diversity in architecture and design styles—ethnic, funky, clean, or classic—which is why the Lakewood area is such a good place to do business. I believe that art, as well as the artful interior, is a creative expression of who a person really is.
What inspires your work?
My artwork is contemporary, Buddhist-inspired paintings. Each piece has a Tibetan prayer flag embedded within, offering a humble request for compassion, peace, or wisdom. I am inspired by the imagery and saturated colors found in traditional Tibetan Buddhist ritual objects, like thangkas and mandalas.
